If life goes on as it should, we would eventually reach that stage in our life when we won`t want or even need that much space to live in. At retirement age when our bones are starting to get brittle and our joints are starting to creak, we`d probably prefer to limit our movements to what`s necessary. Too big a house will definitely involve too much manual labor in terms of cleaning-more than we are probably able to handle. Given this concern, it would be best to move to a smaller space such as a granny flat.Also known as the "granny suite" or a secondary suite, this type of flat is characterized by a smaller dwelling area easily accessible from the main house on the property either as an attached or detached unit. It was originally developed for the intention of accommodating the elderly who still wish to be independent but are too fragile in health to be left completely alone without a concerned individual like a daughter or son nearby. Another distinguishing characteristic of this type of dwelling is the compactness in design. The limited mobility of elderly individuals would require a space where everything the occupants would ever need would be easy to access within a few paces. A good flat design would also make room for possible add-ons most elderly individuals would probably want to have in their home to assist them in their mobility. Examples are rails along the walls for holding onto while walking and ramps instead of steps. For one, you would have to get rid of all the things you don`t need anymore. Be brutal as you sort through your clutter, segregating all your belongings into must-haves, things of sentimental value, usable items, and flat design. The first two you can keep but the rest you must dispose. For the still-usable items, you can set up a garage sale and sell them there. Not only do you get rid of them, you also get to earn some money which you can put into your holiday fund or to buy accessories for your new space.
